Only in America can an ambitious young man, born under apartheid to (in his own words) a "terrible human being" of a father, go from illegal immigrant to world's most despicable political powerbroker!

The American DreamX®.

watwut 4 days ago [-]
Using the words "born under apartheid" to describe someone from rich white familly that benefitted from apartheid and who became white nationalist ... is something.
ElProlactin 4 days ago [-]
I figured most people would get that the wording was ironic given the context but Poe's Law strikes again.

"White nationalist"? Please describe where and how he has given you that idea?
0xy 4 days ago [-]
White nationalist? Isn't one of his primary romantic interests and mother of some of his children Jewish?

Implying Log Cabin Republicans don't exist.

People can marry those who they're predjudiced against. Against all odds, tons of misogynists manage to get married after all.
0xy 4 days ago [-]
You're right, you do tend to see a lot of KKK members marrying black women.

JD Vance is super easy to see example of a guy who openly disparages race of own wife and kids.
watwut 4 days ago [-]
That does not make one non-white-nationalists. Politics does and that one is white nationalist one. Also, throwing Hitlers salute.

Having a kid with a Jew or sex with non white is not argument here.

as an ignorant Brit, where exactly does this money go?
jfengel 3 days ago [-]
Mostly, advertising. Radio, TV, Internet, as well as the agencies that create the ads. Americans are utterly blanketed with political advertising during our interminable campaigns.

He's extremely limited in how much he can give directly to the campaign, but as long as you've got a fig leaf that you're not actually working for the candidate, you can spend as much as you want.

That's just the First Amendment in action. The Citizens United decision extended that businesses, as individuals pooling their money, but when you're a trillionaire you don't even need the Supreme Court's approval.

Spending half a billion of hard-earned money, for the good of the people ! Truly inspiring !

The problem with this statement is no one will be able to tell if it's satire or not.

I recommend people not recreate cult language as satire.

tim333 4 days ago [-]
I think it's safe to say it's satire. Though satire often gets a bit lost on HN.

I readily admit to being literal minded more than I should be, but some people here...

Pascal’s Political Wager:

- If Musk wins: not satire.

- If he loses: satire.

> A large portion of America Pac’s output focuses on attack ads against Democratic candidates such as Talarico, often accusing them of being radical socialists or targeting them over supporting transgender rights. The Pac has spent $28m on anti-Talarico content, including between $300,000 and 350,000 in October on a single Google ad targeting the Texas Senate candidate.

“James Talarico supports parents being charged with child abuse if they do not support transitioning their children,” stated the ad, which was shown more than 10m times over an eight day period.

How does Musk sleep at night?

jfengel 3 days ago [-]
Extremely well. He's getting everything he wanted out of life.

If he's having sleep problems, it's because of the ketamine. His conscience, however, is not just clear. He is certain that he's making the world a better place for everybody who matters. (Which may be limited to just him.)

It’s the win at any cost mindset with the post hoc rationalization that intelligent people can do with politics being utterly corrupt to stop this mess. We should really get money out of politics. SV is the new iteration of “Absolute power corrupts absolutely”. These tech guys have way too much money and power. You’d think they cured cancer or something instead of capturing attention and showing ads.

More like the people in power protecting his ass are about to be replaced and he is scared. See Circulation of the Elites. There is always some group somewhere trying to co-opt the system. Short term buying ppl works. Long term it doesnt. Through out human history.

It is always cracking me up when Republicans are pointing on anyone left from the center like a guy is some kind maosist about to seize the means of production. And then they will turn around and offer you 5000 USD per vote if they win.

Not even the thickest european left wing populists would dare to say anything like that...

The U.S voting cohort is uniquely stupid and/or apathetic.
Zigurd 3 days ago [-]
It sure seems that it doesn't take much. Kevin O'Leary gets people to lend him money to build data centers from being on a TV show. A disturbingly large number of people think Trump is a business genius because of his TV show. Elon Musk looks very legit by comparison.

On a giant pile of cash, presumably.

The man's a psychopath, he doesn't care about hurting other people or what anyone thinks of him.

Several of those exact laws are on the books in blue states. Is it an inaccurate characterization of the platform, or are you outraged light was shone on it?

Can musk get over the fact that his daughter is trans already? We'd all love to move on from his annoying political outbursts. Thank you in advance.
